What is a tax withholding planner?
Withholdwise is a private federal and state withholding planner. It uses your pay, withholding, income changes, and planning details to estimate whether your current withholding may be drifting from your target. It is educational planning software, not tax preparation or tax filing software.
Is Withholdwise a tax withholding calculator or tax software?
It is a withholding calculator and planning tool, not a tax return product. Withholdwise can help you review paycheck withholding, compare safe-harbor planning benchmarks, and prepare questions or W-4 planning notes. It does not prepare, sign, or file a federal or state tax return.
Can I owe money at tax time without paying an IRS penalty?
Yes. Owing money on April 15 does not automatically mean you will get an IRS penalty. According to official IRS guidance (IRS Topic No. 306 and IRS Publication 505), the IRS waives underpayment penalties under a rule called "Safe Harbor." If your paychecks withhold enough tax during the year to cover 90% of what you owe this year—or 100% of what you owed last year (110% if your income is over $150,000)—the IRS will not charge you an underpayment penalty. You will still need to pay the remaining bill by April 15, but you will not owe extra penalty fees.
Can I check my paycheck withholding from a paystub?
Yes. You can upload a text-based paystub or photo for browser-based extraction of gross pay, federal/state withholding, and detected pre-tax deductions (401k, HSA, health insurance). Always review every detected value in the planner to ensure your pre-tax and bonus inputs are complete.
Which paystub fields does Withholdwise read?
The paystub parser extracts current and year-to-date gross pay, federal withholding, state withholding, federal taxable wages, and common pre-tax deduction line items (401k, HSA, FSA, health insurance). When pre-tax deductions are detected, Withholdwise automatically populates them and expands the pre-tax accordion so you can verify your baseline.
Are my paystubs stored or sent to Withholdwise?
Withholdwise is designed to process paystub information in your browser whenever possible. The paystub parser does not need your Social Security number. Local scenarios, pulse history, and Pro status may remain in browser storage. Redact SSNs, bank details, addresses, and employee IDs before uploading.
Can I upload a photo of a paystub?
Yes. PNG, JPG, JPEG, and WEBP images can be read with an in-browser OCR engine. Use a sharp, well-lit, flat image with the entire statement visible. Shadows, folds, glare, handwriting, and very small print can reduce accuracy. Always compare the detected values with the original statement.
What should I do if my PDF is password-protected?
Withholdwise does not ask you to send the PDF password. Open the statement in your PDF reader, save an unlocked copy—often through File → Print → Save as PDF—and upload the unlocked copy. You can also enter the values manually.
What if my paystub cannot be read?
Enter the values manually using the planner. A failed extraction is intentional when the statement is unreadable, uses an unusual layout, or produces inconsistent current and year-to-date amounts. This protects you from relying on an incorrect prefill.
How often should I review tax withholding?
Quarterly is a practical review cadence. Recheck after a raise, bonus, job change, RSU vest, marriage, new dependent, major deduction change, or substantial 1099 or side-hustle income. Your employer payroll settings and personal tax facts can change the result.
Does Withholdwise support multiple W-2s, a spouse, or 1099 income?
Yes. Add additional W-2 or spouse income in the planner, and use the bonus, RSU, and self-employment fields for other income. For self-employment planning, you can enter expenses or business miles. Keep records and consult a tax professional for filing decisions.
What are safe-harbor withholding benchmarks?
The planner uses planning benchmarks such as 90%, 100%, and 110% of estimated tax liability to help frame potential exposure. These are screening signals, not a guarantee that you will avoid a penalty or owe a particular amount. IRS rules and individual circumstances determine the applicable requirement.
Can Withholdwise tell me exactly how much I will owe?
No. Withholdwise provides estimates and planning signals based on the information you enter. Bonuses, credits, deductions, state rules, investment income, self-employment, and other facts can materially change a final tax result. Use the estimate to decide what to review, not as a guaranteed balance due.
Does Withholdwise give W-4 tax advice?
It provides educational W-4 planning guidance and a downloadable summary. It does not replace IRS instructions, employer payroll guidance, or advice from a qualified tax professional. Review any change with the appropriate source before submitting a new W-4.
Do I need an account to use the withholding planner?
No. The core planner is available without an account. Authentication is requested when you begin a Pro checkout so the purchase can be associated with your account.
How do I protect or move my planning data?
Use Portable Vault in the Track tab. You can save an encrypted 256-bit AES vault directly into your local Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud folder, allowing seamless cross-device sync without uploading your data to remote cloud servers.
How much does Withholdwise Pro cost?
Withholdwise Pro offers an Annual plan ($49/yr) and a Lifetime plan ($169 one-time). Visit the pricing page to compare Free vs. Pro features and choose a plan.
